This beautiful  climber can be grown as a shrub as the canes are very stout and sturdy.  Rebloom is very good and  the glossy dark leaves have above average disease resistance.  The blooms are large,  fragrant, and occur in great numbers.  Because of its many fine attributes David Austin used it in the breeding of some of his English roses.  It is said to tolerate some shade.  Bred in 1949  by Boerner, it is rated as hardy from zone 4.
