This climber has very thick, sturdy canes with lots of thorns.  It can be grown as a large, vase shaped plant or trained on something.  In Italian its name means " the highest".  The large single blooms are a brilliant Chinese red  which sets off the golden stamens  dramatically.  The leaves are dark and glossy with average blackspot problems.  Rebloom is good throughout the season.  In fall it has huge fat orange hips.  Bred in 1966 by Delbard, rated as hardy from zone 4.
