So far this is my favorite purple rose, and favorite Gallica. The medium sized blooms are usually a deep grape purple, fading to a slatey color. They occur in great numbers for several weeks in spring with no rebloom. They bloom all along the gracefully arching canes. The plant has very good blackspot resistance, and can grow in poor soil and partial shade. It's about 5x5' though I have a second plant which is climbing into a tree. On its own roots it can sucker which can produce plants to pot up and give to friends. Bred sometime before 1847, rated as hardy from zone 4.
