This Portland was one of the first to be introduced. It is a compact shrub to about 4x4, very sturdy and thorny. It has a great spring flush and sporadic rebloom. The blooms are a good size, a velvety dark crimson with purple shadings and a fine strong fragrance. It could be grown in a pot, and appreciates a little shade in the afternoon. Average disease resistance. Bred in 1819, hardy from zone 5.
